A Month of Sundays
September, 1999
September 5, 1999: How God: A Dramatic Sermon
Worship Leader: Finley Campbell
Worship Associate: Marilyn Ratliff
This service is the second sermon by Finley Campbell on the nature of
monotheism, the first having been given a year ago on "Why God?" The
sermon will deal with how God was created out of the contradictions
attendant on the shift from a communal social structure to a servile
one; in other words, the shift from neolithic communality to a
slavetalistic hierarchy, combined with the need/urge/poetic activity
of personifying nature. The core dramatic narrative will deal
specifically with the transformation of the great hunter leader
Yahweh into the Lord God.
Sunday, September 12, 1999: Ingathering Water Communion
Worship Leaders: Rev. Nina Grey, Rev. Beth Williams, Rev.
David W. Arksey
Worship Associate: Joan Pederson
We enter and reenter our community, beginning a new church year and a
new ministry. Let us enter joyfully! We celebrate our unique gifts
and the common values we hold dear. Bring your water from a special
place, and we will pour the waters into a community bowl and bless
the coming year. After the service the young and many young at heart
will water living plants with the water from our sacred ceremony of
reconnection.
September 19, 1999: A New Page
Worship Leader: Rev. Nina D. Grey
Worship Associate: Rosemary Snow
We will think about the "is" and the "ought," reality and vision.
Drawing on the Jewish New Year tradition of returning to our best
values, we will reflect on starting again to move toward what might
be, in our lives, our families, church, communities, and world.
September 26, 1999: And the Wheel Turns On
Worship Leader: Rev. Nina D. Grey
Worship Associate: Finley Campbell
Light and dark play with each other. Which shall win? Is it a battle
or a dance? Today we reflect on the changing seasons, of the earth
and of life, and contemplate the relationships of opposites.
