The Gift of Forgiveness

In this service honoring the Jewish High Holy Days of Rosh Hashanah (the New Year) and Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement) Madeiria Myrieckes will plumb the depths of that most difficult of human tasks, forgiving. This important and complex theme of the Jewish tradition emerges in many world religions and is a challenge for us in our daily lives.

Madeiria Myrieckes is a long-time member of the First Unitarian Church of Chicago. She is the current chair of the Lay Pastoral Care Associates and offers many other of her gifts to the life of our church. She was the coordinator of the Sabbatical Committee in 2005, and she has attended UU Leadership School

Hunger for What?

In this time of Ramadan, our Muslim brothers and sisters observe a fast from sun up to sun down. Missing meals with intention has special meanings. We'll reflect on these and also on other sides of hunger, of spirit and body, in our times.

This Sunday is a very special 50th birthday celebration of the Chicago Children's Choir, created in 1956 by the Rev. Christopher Moore of the First Unitarian Church of Chicago. Rev. Nina Grey and the Choir's CEO Christina Deaton will reflect on the overlapping missions of the church, choir and United Nations and the meaning of the choir for our times. Josephine Lee will conduct the Choir in an abundance of varied music for our spirits. There will be a lovely reception following this service for all ages.

Caring as a Social Mandate

Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote: "Of all the forms of inequalities, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane." Today we join in honoring Health Care Sabbath and pay attention to the current state of and health care accessibility in our land. We will draw on resources from The Campaign for Better Health Care, which is a coalition of organizations and individuals organizing to help create and advocate for an accessible, quality health care system that provides for all.
