Faith and Politics

Sermon: Rev. Nina D. Grey
Worship Leader: Rev. W. David Arksey
Worship Associate: Joan Staples

What kind of relationship can religious people have to government? Is there a responsibility that goes along with holding a vision and believing in certain kinds of values? What is the connection between spiritual life and politics? Nina will reflect on these, drawing some inspiration from the book, God's Politics, by Jim Wallis. Joan Staples will provide music, accompanied by our Director of Music, Michael Thorn. Join us for an enthusiastic celebration of our July 4th holiday and a look at church and state, faith and politics, and patriotism.

The Island of the Birds

Sermon: Ellen Cooper-Davis

The sermon will explore the discovery of unexpected wisdom in what seems, on the surface, ordinary.

Ellen Cooper-Davis is entering her third year at Meadville Lombard Theological School where she is pursuing a Master's degree of Divinity and ordination as a Unitarian Universalist minister. She is keenly interested in the crafting of Unitarian Universalist theology, as well as in the infusion of the fine and performing arts into ministry, liturgy and worship.

The Nature of Unions
Sermon:
Anya Sammler

"Union" is a term that describes a coming together. Our worship will investigate the nature of "unions" -- from marriage ceremonies to the cooperation of right and left brain functions -- with the focus on the ceremonial quality of naming and honoring a coming together as "union."

Anya Sammler is a second year seminarian at Meadville Lombard who is enjoying her first summer in the south side of Chicago.

War Bonds

Sermon: Scott Michael
Worship Associate: Finley Campbell

How does war affect us all? How is the content of our culture altered by the very fact that we are at war? Through what lenses do we look during wartime? Who -- and what -- should we consider as casualties of war? How does war affect our most personal relationships and our views of self? Meadville Lombard seminarian Scott Michael offers a service dedicated to all those who fought, died and were transformed by war.

Arrayed in Prayer, Aligned in Faith

Sermon: Jessica Purple Rodela

As a ministerial aspirant, I am often asked to lead prayer. But what does it mean "to pray," and what can its practice offer UUs?

Jessica Purple Rodela, a former high school English teacher from Texas, has just finished her first year at Meadville Lombard Theological School.
