Walking the Talk: The Ministry of David Eaton

Ms. Archene Turner, seminarian
Meadville Lombard Theological School

Rev. Dr. David Eaton was a UU minister of color for 23 years at All Souls Church, Unitarian, in Washington DC. What makes a successful ministry? Looking at the ministry of David Eaton might give us some answers. Ms. Archene Turner is in Meadville Lombard's modified residency program. She also works full time as a chemical engineer for the United States Patent and Trademark Office in Washington DC, her home. Archene is a life-long activist, especially for children, Gay-Lesbian-Bisexual-Transgendered (GLBT) concerns, and religious freedom/equality. Ultimately she hopes to start a UU boarding school incorporating her many passions and missions.

Are UUs as Liberal as We Think?

Susan Scrimshaw

UUs are proud of our acceptance of religious pluralism, but do we always act on this principle? Susan C. Scrimshaw, PhD is a medical anthropologist and Dean of the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Raised in Guatemala, she self-identifies as a multicultural person. Her work focuses on removing health disparities in US Latino and African American communities and in improving health globally. She is a member of our church, chairs the Worship and Music Committee, and sings in the choir.

Wrestling with Angels

Rev. Barbara Pescan, Senior Minister
Unitarian Church of Evanston, Illinois

Jacob said to the angel: I will not let you go unless you bless me. Is the injury caused by wrestling a blessing, too? And, after you have experienced a new awareness, how does the inner transformation become action in the world? On this Palm Sunday, the sermon is a reflection on individual and societal change.

The Rev. Barbara Pescan is a graduate of Starr King School for the Ministry in Berkeley, California. In 2002 at the UUA General Assembly in Quebec City, she preached the sermon at the Service of the Living Tradition. Rev. Pescan served congregations in Oak Park, IL and West Redding, CT before sharing the co-ministry of the Unitarian Church of Evanston with her partner, Ann Tyndall, for eight years. She now serves UCE as senior minister.
