The One and the Many

Flower Communion Sunday/Bring A Flower!

On June 6, we celebrate Flower Communion, a joyful ritual for all ages. I hope you will be with us. It is a time to be together, individuals and families, to celebrate our community. Remember to bring a Flower!

Flower Communion was founded by Unitarian minister the Revs. Norbert and Maja Capek of Prague, Czechoslovakia, in 1923, just a year after they founded their Unitarian congregation. Converts to Unitarianism, they replaced the traditional communion with the Flower Communion as an affirmation of their new person-affirming faith. During World War II, Norbert Capek spoke out against Nazism, was incarcerated and became a martyr for his witness for justice. His wife brought Flower Communion to the United States. Along with the story of its founding, the ritual of Flower Communion is, itself, a show and tell lesson for our young people, about our first UU principle. It is no wonder that it spread so completely among UU congregations.

Sermon: Rev. Nina D. Grey

The Changing Interfaith Landscape

This morning, Rev. Nina Grey will reflect on the changing nature of interfaith realities and relationships that has been evolving especially since 1965, when the doors to immigration from Asia, Africa, Central and South America were opened wide. What challenges do this new reality represent, and how do those challenges relate to Unitarian Universalism?

Nina will draw for some insights from her most recent Doctor of Ministry course, which was "Globalization, Immigration and Religious Pluralism". In addition, Nina will reflect on these questions from the perspective of her service on the Hyde Park and Kenwood Interfaith Council. Nina will be ending her two-year term as president of the Hyde Park and Kenwood Interfaith Council on June 30, 2004. The Council's Annual Meeting will take place at our church, June 15, 2004, with dinner beginning at 6, and the program, election of officers, and consideration of new by-laws from 7 to 9.

Fathering

On this day when we honor the fathers in our families and community, those still living and those who have gone before, we will think about fathering. This sermon will be a reflection on fathering not only from the perspective of a noun (father), but also as a verb, (fathering) acts and relationships of providing for, caring about, helping along, nurturing, visioning, strengthening and evoking the potential of people and of communities.

"Stonewall at 35"

Sermon: Bill Neely

Many people consider the Stonewall uprising in June 1969 to be the beginning of the modern Bisexual, Gay, Lesbian, and Transgendered Rights movement in America. As we commemorate the brave people who protested for fairness and dignity in '69, we'll pause to consider how far we've come and where we're going in the ongoing struggle for equal rights
.
Bill Neely is a member of the Unitarian Church of Norfolk (Virginia) and has completed his second year of study at Meadville Lombard Theological School. Next year, he and his wife Shannon will move to St. Paul, MN, where Bill will serve as the Hallman Intern at Unity Church-Unitarian. Bill likes reading, sports, politics, animals, and naps.
