Journeys of Suffering and Hope

(If you have forgotten to turn your clock forward one hour, you will miss the service)

This month includes the spring holidays of Easter and Passover. The first story is about one individual man on a journey. Before whatever the Easter event might have been, Jesus travels on a journey of ministry. He is an itinerant preacher and teacher who moves through space and time, offering a message of transformation. Then he journeys to Jerusalem, where he is first welcomed and then reviled and crucified. Some say his journey didn't end with suffering and death but led, instead, to resurrection and new life.

The Passover story is of a people who suffered under slavery, and of their leader's intervention to free them. It is followed by years of wandering, uncertainty and suffering in the desert.

Today we will reflect on the place of suffering in the life journeys of individuals, families, and communities. We will confront the idea that suffering is redemptive with pointed questions and challenges.

In Rachel's Footsteps

On April 18 we will honor nature's journey in an Earth Day Celebration. Remembering Rachel Carson's warning for the earth in her book Silent Spring, we'll raise up the recurring need for the voice of warning on behalf of the earth and all its creatures, including us.

Reflections of an Early Unitarian

In 1810 the Reverend Jaazaniah Crosby arrived in Charlestown, New Hampshire to begin his Unitarian ministry. He was my great great great grandfather. Some 30 of his sermons survive, written between 1810 and 1850. Just what were those early Unitarians thinking and preaching? Do their words have any relevance for today's Unitarian Universalists? This sermon examines some of the Rev. Crosby's sermons in response to these questions.

Susan C. Scrimshaw, PhD, is Professor and Dean of the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and is a member of this church.
