Beginning With Gifts

Sometimes we ask: what do I need at church, or, what does my family need from the church. Or we may invert the question, asking, what does the church need from me? Today we will think about church and ministry, with a different starting point. We will wonder, what are the gifts I bring to the church? What are the gifts and talents I and/or my family has to develop and offer? Or what gifts does a group within the church bring to us all? And we may even inquire, what gifts has the community to offer? And what gifts do we have, to offer to the larger world?

For this multigenerational service focused on gifts and talents, we will draw on the New Testament story of the Parable of the Talents, the Hebrew Bible story of Purim, stories from other traditions, our personal lives, and the life of our church.

Our Annual Talent Auction will follow this service.

More Than One Way

Two days before the Illinois primaries, we'll reflect on how others and we engage in political life. This is part of an ongoing exploration about how, in our times, to do the work of social justice, from a liberal perspective. We will take into account some of the cultural divides in our nation as well as the dialogue between modern and postmodern ethics. This service also reflects the liberal religious tradition of pre-election sermons and is meant as an encouragement to vote on March 16.

Claiming Our Future: Creating Vision!

Beginning with an inspirational invitation, we will embark on the work of creating vision together. A brief meditative chapel experience will initiate very important small group work. We'll hear and share visions for our future. Trained facilitators, who are all church members, will guide us. We'll end with a closing ritual of affirmation and hope. Our children and youth will also have an experience of creating vision for our life ahead.

For Our Future

We are growing in our understanding of what it means to care for our congregation. We are developing a vision and we will move forward also to create a new mission and covenant. In this service Rev. Nina Grey will explore with us what she believes are essentials for a passionate, spiritually growing, life-giving faith community, set in a neighborhood and world.

Our Annual Church Pledge Campaign begins with this service and a Special All-Church Lunch Event to follow.
