Embracing The Other

Holidays call us to open our hearts with a hospitable spirit. Chanukah affirms the importance of honoring diversity and the freedom to be who you are. Christmas teaches us the lessons of love and peace and in this season we are more likely to greet the stranger on the street. Yet we are also warned to be especially careful in these times. Our government cautions us to be alert, parents teach their children to be cautious. What are the challenges of welcoming the other, the other beyond the self and the other within the self?

Christmas Eve Candlelight Service

Join us for our annual joyful Christmas Eve Candlelight Service. We shall welcome in the holiday with carols, meditations, readings, and our traditional candlelighting. As the sanctuary grows dark, with all the lights extinguished, we will fill the sacred room with the light of candles. We will remember that the lights of truth, love and courage help bring hope and strengthen our dream of peace. The Chicago Children's Choir fills our senses with delight as they sing from their repertoire of holiday music. This is a service for all ages.

December 29, 2002 10 A.M.
Rev. Nina Grey, Joanne Kent, and the Congregation

We reflect on the meaning of Kwanzaa, and the symbols of this important African American cultural affirmation which lasts for eight days, from the day after Christmas until the New Year. We light the candles of the Kinara, and ponder the meanings of the seven principles and artifacts of Kwanzaa. If you wish to help create this service, contact Joanne Kent, member of the Worship and Music Committee.
