Martin Luther King, Jr. Sunday: And Then What?
We reflect on Dr. King’s passion for justice based peace. Such peace remains a most elusive goal. Our sixth UU principle asks us to promote a vision of one world with peace and justice for all.
Recent studies of conflict suggest that conflicts are often not economic or even nation based, but are conflicts between differing cultures or identities, or conflicts between one value system and another. Jay Rothman suggests that identity based conflict is very difficult to resolve and Samuel Huntington writes that cultural or civilizational conflicts will be a dominant form of conflict in our times. We will think on these things and how we may engage in peacemaking in light of them and of Dr. King' vision.

Finley C. Campbell
What God? The Monotheistic Trope in Unitarian Universalism
Dr. Finley C. Campbell will offer a sermon which includes reflection about God, as part of continuing reflections offered by various people during this church year about beliefs and understandings of God (See Paul Ricker's On Reason and Wonder, Dec. 2, Rev. Nina Grey's Hospitality in These Times, Dec. 16, and a forthcoming sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlene Walker, March 24, 2002).
Finley's sermon is a response to patriotic theism. Finley has previously given two other sermons about God in the last few years. About this sermon, Finley writes, "This is a completion of my trinity of sermons dealing with the nature of God from both a dialectical materialist and UU - Baptist Christian perspective.
Finley Campbell is Chair of the First Unitarian Worship and Music Committee, as well as a member of the Social Action Council and Charlotte Lackner Anti-Racism Committee. Finley's religious background and continuing spiritual interest also includes a relationship with Baptist Christianity.
First Forum: To be announced.
