Urban Coalitions in Ministry

We minister to and with one another in an urban congregation. We reach in and out. Ours is a ministry in context. We are aware of and responsive to our neighborhood, our city, and our changing world. Sometimes we serve in coalitions with those of other faiths. Since last month's tragic events, how much more important is it that we nurture bonds across faiths and cultures? How essential that we create bonds of cooperation with others in the city?

Transylvanian Roots, Unitarian Branches

Ours is an historic faith, begun in the 1500s in Transylvania. There are still today thousands of Unitarians in Transylvania. What can we learn from our early Unitarian history? What do we have in common with our Transylvanian religious brothers and sisters today? Do we need to nurture their faith as well as our own?

Love is Forever: United Nations Sunday

On September 16, just days after the terrible bombing of the World Trade Center and Pentagon, Rev. Marlene Walker read us a litany about helping our children heal. Each section ended with the refrain, love is forever. Today is United Nations Sunday. It is the birthday of the Chicago Children's Choir, founded by Rev. Chris Moore of our church. In this annual celebration we honor the Choir. This Sunday we think as parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, mentors, teachers and friends, about how, in these more vulnerable times, we can create a more loving world for all children.

Coming out to Life

October is "Coming Out Month" in the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. This past year we dusted off our Welcoming Congregation committee and began to look at ways that we, as a congregation, can continue and celebrate that work. In a time when one of the first responses to the terrorism in NYC and Washington DC was the Revs. Jerry Fallwell and Pat Robertson saying the attacks were a response by God to the evil of "homosexuals, pagans and others," coming out takes on new meaning. Join me, Rev. Nina and others as we celebrate October as Coming Out Month.
