To Err Is Human

Worship Leader: Rev. Nina Grey

At the time of the Jewish High Holy Days, we reflect on some themes of our Jewish heritage, one of the sources of our Unitarian Universalist living tradition. We think on imperfection as a human quality and on the nature of forgiveness.

Participation

Worship Leader: Rev. Nina Grey

In a time-honored UU tradition, Rev. Grey will offer an "Election Sermon." We will focus on the meaning of our fifth principle which encourages us to affirm and promote the right of conscience and the use of the democratic process in our congregations and in the world. Is our vote important? What else might it mean to participate in democracy?

11:45 Social Justice Forum: "10 Political Questions in Search of Answers." Some months ago the Social Justice Council asked all the Presidential candidates to answer 10 questions. The Council now invites the congregation to discuss these questions.

Promising the Children

Worship Leader: Rev. Nina Grey

On United Nations Sunday we welcome back the Chicago Children's Choir, which celebrates its birthday in this annual marking of its founding at First Unitarian Church. In solidarity with others in our nation, we honor Children's Sabbath on this day. In this intergenerational service, let us enjoy the music of young people and reflect on UN promises to young people and our own commitments.

11:45 am First Forum: "Commitment to Children." We continue reflecting on First Unitarian's commitment to children in our community and the larger world. Rev. Nina Grey will lead the forum.

End of D.S.T.: Turn Your Clock Back Saturday Night

Halloween Sunday

Quidditch Anyone?

Worship Leader: Rev. Marlene Walker

On this weekend before Halloween we will look at the immensely popular books about Harry Potter. Though supposedly written for children, these books have had a wide following. Harry is a young orphan who discovers that not only is he a Wizard but also the son of a famous one. He goes off to Hogwarts, a Wizard prep school, and the stories center around his escapades there, especially around the sport of Quidditch - a lacrosse-type game played in the air on, of all things, flying brooms! I will look at the many themes in these stories that connect to our UU Purposes and Principles, among them the inherent worth and dignity of each individual, the search for truth and meaning, and respect for the interdependent web.

11:45 First Forum: "Religious Lessons of Harry Potter." At this forum we continue seeking the lessons that can be learned from Harry Potter.

Committee & Council Chairs: Save Sat., Oct. 28, for the Ministerial Startup Retreat with Rev. Marlene Walker. Details to be announced.
