"How God: Act II, Scene 2:How God Created Man, Male and Female Created He Them"
Worship Leader: Dr. Finley C. Campbell
Writes Finley: "This is a part of my ongoing Labor Day services dealing with the nature of the Monotheistic Tradition in human history. I argue that this tradition is a manifestation of dialectical materialism in its Trinitarian guide: the existential, the physical, and the historical. In the past I have spoken on "Why God, Act I" (Sept. 1998) and "Why God, Act II" (Sept. 1999). Now to celebrate the last Labor Day weekend of the real 20th century, I am treating the entire service as a dramatic production in which the members of the congregation will participate as actors. Be warned: For those interested in a religious flow, this service will not be for you. Rather, to demonstrate how God created man (male/female), the flow must be interrupted even as it is being created, must be disrupted even as it is being celebrated. This will be done to symbolize the fact that, as Teilhard de Chardin would assert, the labor to make man truly human continues even unto this day--now flowing, now broken, forever forevering.
Dr. Finley C. Campbell joined First Unitarian Church in 1992. He is on the Board of Trustees and is a social humanist activist on the Social Justice Council, is a member of the Charlotte Lackner Anti-Racism Committee, teaches adult education courses on racism and other topics, and is a member of the Worship and Music Committee and a Worship Associate. Water Ceremony of Ingathering: A Service for All Ages
Living Waters
Worship Leaders: Rev. Nina Grey, Rev. Marlene Walker, Rev. David Arksey
Worship Associate: Joan Pederson
Let us come together for our annual multi-generational Water Ceremony. We bring water from our separate lives and journeys. We gather and regather to honor our living traditions and our many diverse stories. We join together for the celebration of our community life.
Bring yourself, family and friends, and the water you drew from a source this summer and pour it into our common bowl. Bring tap water as a metaphor for a special place if you haven't collected water from elsewhere. We will have water on hand for those who need some when they get to church.

Keeping in Touch
Worship Leader: Rev. Nina Grey
Worship Associate: Rosemary Snow
This Sunday, Rev. Grey will offer the first in a sermon series focused on our Living Traditions which inspire our quests for meaning and truth. We will reflect on our first source, "Direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces that create and uphold life." What might that experience be? How can we keep in touch with it? How does it affect the living of our values?

Seasons of Being and Doing: An Autumn Reflection
Worship Leader: Rev. Nina Grey
Autumn is the season of turning. Near the moment of equinox, we think on the seasons of life, the balance and imbalance of being and doing through the days and years.
