As Unitarian Universalists we draw on that humanist tradition that counsels us to heed the guidance of reason and the results of science. The Big Bang, evolution, the scientific method, cause and effect, direct experience and experimentation&emdash;for many of us, these are concepts we have incorporated into our assumptions about the world and then never think twice about. Our primary age children are learning about these concepts now. In the curriculum "Celebrating the Origins of Our Universe," they are learning an evolutionary story of creation, and they are conducting experiments related to the science behind the story. This sermon will explore the implications for our Unitarian Universalist faith of what some call the New Science&emdash;the science of quarks, chaos theory, and quantum mechanics&emdash;as we draw on our scientific tradition as a source of faithful wisdom.
