How is the new welfare system working? The Southside Committee for Welfare Reform invites you to a town meeting, Monday, January 25, 1999, 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at St. Thomas The Apostle Catholic Church located at 55th and Woodlawn, to find out for yourself. Speakers include John Bouman of National Clearing House for Legal Services, State Representative Barbara Flynn Currie and State Senator Barack Obama. Discussion topics cover: the basic structure of the new law addressing the many people threatenned with being eliminated from the welfare rolls by July 1999; Illinois Department of Human Service policies with respect to work hours and sanctions; as well as the level of support available for items like child care, jobs and transportation.
Intergenerational Social Event for February: Please note that the date for the R.E. Councils next Intergenerational Social Event has been changed from February 5 to Friday, February 12. Join us on the 12th for Movie and Pizza Night at 6:30 p.m. in Chris Moore Parlor.
A New Childrens Religious Education class: Beginning February 7, children ages 3 through 4 will meet as the Discoverers class. The class will meet in the Little Peoples Learning Center on the top floor of the Pennington Center. Marge Saphir will be lead teacher.
Please welcome two new additions to the church staff. Cecilia Briscoe is our new Administrative Assistant. She will be working afternoons and evenings on weekdays and all day on Saturday. Also, Mike Green, our Assistant Custodian, has taken a one month leave of absence. Eric Marshall will taking over his duties starting today while he is gone.
The Charlotte Lackner Anti-racism Committee will meet on Sunday, January 31, 12:00 pm in the Garden Room.
