On Sunday, January 3,
1999, the Social Justice Council in cooperation with members of the Charlotte Lackner
Anti-Racism Committee will be presenting for the first time ever, an Emancipation
Proclamation Day Service and Program. This activity will consist of the following: 10:00 - 11:00 a.m., the Emancipation Proclamation Church Service, featuring Revs. Sydney Wilde and Dennis Daniel and Rev. Daniel C. Taylor, former slave and at present the chaplain of the Washington DC Irregular Troops. 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., A Jubilee Luncheon (potluck), with a variety of foods, Northern and Southern, symbolizing the official end to slavery, in Texas, on June 19, 1865. We are hoping to have Joan Staples give a reading on what the Emancipation Day felt like on the Sea Islands of South Carolina in 1863. 1:30 - 2:50 p.m., the pageant, O Freedom: The Day of Jubilee, celebrating the 138th anniversary of the official promulgation of the Emancipation Proclamation by Abraham Lincoln, January 1, 1863, featuring narration, audience participation, music, and dance. We are inviting area churches and guest choirs to participate in this historic event. Naturally, we hope and pray to have full attendance from the members and friends of our own church. |
