The Grove Park fund at the church
currently pays for the telephone, security, and the utilities for the Child Care Center at
Grove Park. The Grove Park Task Force hopes to open our big basement as a resale shop,
focusing on clothing, household items and children's things, sometime in 1999. The Co-op
and stores in the new shopping center at 47th and Lake Park would provide a cash register
and guidance for a mentoring program. Cindy Carroll will work on developing an operations
manual with the help of people who have had retail experience. With the help of our Criminal Justice Committee, the Moratorium for the Death Penalty Coalition held a rally at First Unitarian Church on February 20, which drew about 75 people and press coverage. That committee would like to charter a bus to transport relatives to visit inmates in the Tamms Prison in southern Illinois, a facility that is currently unreachable without auto. As the $429 raised at First Unitarian Church on January 17 is short of the $1,100 needed, coalitions may need to be formed with other organizations that would share the cost, preferably UU ones. Alternately, the First Unitarian Church amount could reduce each rider's cost by roughly $10. The April Social Justice Council's first forum will be on Sunday, April 25. It will feature one or two individuals from Africa and is entitled, Africa and Modern World Economics. |
