The Journey Toward Wholeness special
collection, held on January 17, 1999, raised $643.50; $214.50 of which was sent to the UUA
for anti-racist projects selected by the Whitney Young Fund. The other $429.00 will be
used by our Criminal Justice Committee to subsidize travel by relatives to visit inmates
in southern Illinois prisons, as we believe that helping maintain family connections will
assist prisoners to successfully transition back into society upon their release. The
exact way those local funds will be utilized is still being investigated and discussed. We were pleased to hear from Cindy Carroll that 50 of Grove Parcs 87 computer or GED class graduates have thus far landed good jobs. Further, the Grove Parc Residents Council has broadened its funding base, though we still need to be a piece of the support base. At our February Social Justice Council meeting we revised our standard for who was a voting member of the Council. Now anyone active with any of our task forces or committees has a vote, as does anyone who takes on another responsibility with the Council. In addition, those not fitting into either of those two categories will have a vote if they have attended at least 2 of the 4 meetings ending with the meeting at which the vote(s) are taken. Our upcoming Social Justice First Forums are tentatively scheduled to address the following topics: March 21 - The Status of Welfare Reform April 18 - Amnesty Internationals USA Campaign May 16 - African Economics and the World Economy Today. |
