The UUA is encouraging UU
congregations to select a "Journey Toward Wholeness" Sunday, during which a
special collection would be taken to help fund local and national U.U. anti-racism
projects. We have selected January 17, 1999 as our Journey Towards Wholeness
Sunday. Two-thirds of the special collection is to go toward a local anti-racism project,
with the other one-third going to the UUA to help fund anti-racism projects selected by
the Whitney Young Fund. Our local project, offered by our Criminal Justice Committee, is
entitled "Journey Towards Wholeness." It will help convicts, both those serving
just sentences and those serving unjust sentences, maintain their family connections. It
is a journey toward wholeness with family and society, connections often damaged by the
racism in the Criminal Justice system. Maintaining family connections help convicts
reintegrate with society on release. To encourage your generosity, the Social Justice
Council Chair will contribute 50 cents for each of the first $800 dollars contributed by
others to this special collection. Also on January 17 is our January Social Justice First Forum. It will be a workshop entitled "Your Reflections on the Death Penalty," consisting of a questionnaire that will solicit your views , followed by discussion. The discussion will be lead by Bob Davidow, who developed the workshop. Bob is a member of the UU Congregation of Fairfax, VA, a retired law school professor, who is currently a third-year Master of Divinity student at the University of Chicago. The workshop promises to draw us into considering the legal, ethical, and other aspects of this important societal concern. |
