Poinsett Receives University of Michigan Book Award

Author Alex Poinsett, a former Ebony Magazine senior editor, received the University of Michigan Book Award for his 1997 political biography, Walking with Presidents: Louis Martin and the Rise of Black Political Power. Sponsored by the Washington-based Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, the book profiles the late Detroit and Chicago newspaper editor and labor activist. As an adviser to President's John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Jimmy Carter, Martin was responsible for the appointments of Thurgood Marshall to the US Supreme Court, Andrew Brimmer to the Federal Reserve Board, Robert Weaver to Johnson's cabinet and more than 1,000 Blacks to important policy-making positions in the federal government during the 1960s and 1970s.

Pardo Wins Landscape Award

Congratulations to Richard Pardo, who is a winner in Mayor Daley's Landscape Award Program for his work with L.I.L.A.C. in landscaping the west side of the IC embanbkment along Lake Park Avenue.

Anderson Celebrates Anniversary

On March 26, Doug Anderson led a 25th anniversary celebration of his renowned Jackson Park bird walks beginning at the Clarence Darrow Bridge and including the Wooded Island.
