Job Availible: First Church Financial Secretary

First Unitarian Church is looking for an experienced financial secretary. Must have knowledge of Quicken, payroll and not-for-profit accounting principles. Approximately 22 hours per month. If you, or anyone you know, are interested in this opportunity, please contact John Else in the church office.

Tune in to How (Hands-On Weatherization) Workshop coverage 6:30 pm - 7:00 pm Thursdays from February 25 to March 25. You’ll see portions of the eighteen lo-cost and no-cost energy saving instruction "modules" in use to coach weatherization program recipients how to boost savings, and you can call in with questions. This is a project directed by John Porterfield for Renacer Westside Community Network (312) 226-6007.

Clarence Darrow Speaks Here March 13

One of Hyde Park’s most acclaimed residents, and one of the century’s greatest attorneys, Darrow argued the Leopold and Loeb case 75 years ago. The debate over capital punishment still rages: "should the state kill?" "does it deter?" "do innocent people go to the chair - or the lethal injection gurney?"

Hear from Amnesty International, and from Clarence himself on these issues on Saturday March 13, 8:00 p.m. in Hull Chapel. The program is sponsored by the Clarence Darrow Commission (UU) and First Church’s Social Justice Council.

Tickets are $5 and $2 (students, seniors and limited income) in advance; $6 and $3 at the door. Advance tickets may be purchased from Alan Lindrup at First Church, or by calling (773) 881-4028.

Darrow will be portrayed by Rev. Roger Brewin, who has performed as the "Attorney for the Damned" in over 100 venues throughout the country. Join us for an enjoyable and informative evening, and lend your support to the drive for a moratorium on executions.

Quilts Needed for Local Church Quilt Show

The United Church of Hyde Park will hold its 9th Annual Quilt Show on Saturday, May 1, 1999 from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. More than 150 handmade quilts will be on display.

All community members are invited to lend quilts or coverlets that will be exhibited in the show. Exhibitors will receive free admission to the show and their quilt will be featured in the exhibit catalog. We are particularly interested in quilts or coverlets made by family members or friends (not store bought quilts). If you are interested in exhibiting a quilt, call Denise Carter-Blank at (312) 222-4401 for an application form and more information. Deadline for applications: March 20, 1999.

The Quilt Show is a fundraiser for the church. Proceeds will be used for repair of the church Skinner organ and the building.

The United Church of Hyde Park is located at 1448 East 53rd Street (53rd & Blackstone).
