Many of our members come from the South Side of Chicago, though we also attract members from the north side of the city and from suburbs around the city. Many say they are attracted to our congregation because of our diversity, our welcoming spirit, and the opportunities to join with others in exploring spirituality and/or working for social justice. One of the special attractions is our First Forum series, with informative presentations following the Sunday morning service.
Everyone is welcomed and appreciated as an individual, whether in a family or other living arrangement. We are a UU Welcoming Congregation, and intentionally welcome gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons. Our minister conducts ceremonies of civil union in our sanctuary.
Most members participate on committees supporting the congregation’s goals and addressing needs, such as teaching in the religious education program, developing and carrying out programs, supporting the minister, caring for ill members, and representing our faith in the larger world. See Committees
Our services are varied, though all include a good deal of fine music, a thoughtful message from our senior minister, one of our frequent guest pastors, or one of our lay leaders, and opportunities to celebrate sorrows and joys. Lay leaders serve as worship associates. We usually have an intern from Meadville/Lombard Theological School working with our congregation and our senior minister; other students from M/L participate in diverse ways in the congregation. We welcome these opportunities to participate in the process of preparing our new ministerial leaders.
