First Unitarian Society is an independent, self-governing organization. In addition to enjoying the various activities of the congregation, many members find fulfillment in helping to keep the society functioning. This is a great way to get to know people, to “give back” to the church community, and to develop skills.

The Board of Trustees is the governing board of the church. Its nine members are elected to staggered three-year terms at the church’s annual meeting in May. At the annual meeting, the congregation also elects a President-Elect, who, after a year, becomes the President.

The Religious Education Council oversees the religious education program. Its nine members are elected to staggered three-year terms at the annual meeting.

The Social Justice Council coordinates the activities of the various social justice task forces. Its Chair is elected by the congregation at the annual meeting.

The Music and Worship Committee works with the Senior Minister to implement participation by congregation members in the Sunday service. The Music Subcommittee works with the Director of Music on arranging for special concerts, special fundraising, and other activities.

The Finance Committee oversees the financial management of the church, and prepares and implements the annual budget.

The Stewardship Committee conducts the annual pledge drive for member financial support of the church.

The Property Committee oversees the maintenance of the physical plant.

The Investment Committee manages the investment of the endowment.

The Membership Committee organizes the greeting of visitors and friends on Sunday morning, holds orientation sessions and “welcome dinners,” and assists newcomers who wish to join the congregation.

The First Forum Committee finds speakers for the Sunday First Forum sessions after the worship service.

The Communications Committee manages the web site, puts out the monthly newsletter, places notices and advertising in the media, and debates ways to increase the visibility of the church.

The Activities Committee organizes several special events each year, including the Unity Party, a family midwinter celebration, the Talent Auction, a fundraiser, the Annual Banquet in June, and the Thanksgiving Seder dinner.

The Caring Committee organizes assistance to congregation members who are ill or otherwise in need.
