A Sabbatical Letter

The last few days of my time in New York have been marked by typical spring weather, beautiful one day, stormy and windy the next. Now I am preparing to leave Manhattan and move into the Florida part of my journey. I am blessed to have had lots of time with Kim and Hannah. It has also been a delight, on sunny days, to walk in Riverside Park along the Hudson River, ride further north along the Hudson into some lovely hills in Dutchess County, and most recently to visit in Connecticut with close friends and go birdwatching on the Atlantic.

In New York I have enjoyed making the acquaintance of two Imams and visit their Friday prayer services, as well as worship in a variety of Hindu satsangs. In Florida in April and May, I plan to continue enriching my knowledge of some world religions, particularly Buddhism.

As my New York time winds down, I am putting the last touches on a paper for my D. Min. Course in Globalism, Immigration, and the U.S. Religious Landscape; and completing a spiritual journal for my Christian spirituality class. I hope to continue an intentional spiritual practice for myself, in April and May.

I hold all of you in my heart and I am thinking of you now, two days before Easter, imagining many of you lining up in the center aisle to “flower the chalice”, and picturing the young people looking for Easter eggs. When we see each other again, in our sanctuary, it will be another flower occasion, our Flower Communion. Meanwhile, our sabbatical adventure continues. I expect that my Florida experience, less urban, will be very different from the New York one...more relaxed, shoulders touched more often by the sun’s warm rays. I pray that you also will have nurturing times in these spring months; may this season’s renewal of life bring you moments of inspiration and of joy.

With love, in peace,

Nina
